Blogging - A Starters Guide

Posted by erich13 on January 12, 2008

  • Determine the purpose of your blog. At the very least, it can be used for your personal knowledge base, journal, etc (Why I Blog.)
  • Make some choices:
    • Choose an editor application1. For example, because you can’t always just depend upon a blog’s editor, to have all the features you want/like/need, etc.
    • Choose a blog, from various blog providers2. Try out several, and then choose one that appeals to you (e.g. for ease of managment, appearance, etc.)
    • (optional) Choose a photo hosting provider3, so that you can post pictures there, and then link to them from your blog.
    • (optional) Choose means of earning money4
  • Starting Blogging.
  • Enjoy.

1 Editor applications (e.g. Flock’s Blog tool, Google Docs, VIM, SeaMonkey Composer, Outlook Mail Message)
2 Blog Providers (e.g. 360.yahoo.com, Bloglines, blogsome, Blogger, flickr, jaiku, LiveJournal, MySpace, Opera, Performancing, twitter, Vox, WebRing, Windows.Live.Spaces, WordPress)
3 Photo providers (flickr, GooglePhotos, photobucket, webshots).
4 Earning Money providers. For example: www.livingroom.org.au/photolog has links to many sites.

TIP: When to use slash -vs backslash

Posted by erich13 on January 1, 2008

  • “A slash or stroke, /, is a punctuation mark. It is also called an oblique, diagonal, whack, separatrix, virgule, scratch comma, slant, or forward slash. It appears similar to a solidus or shilling mark, which is a separate character.” en.wikipedia
  • “The backslash ( \ ) is a typographical mark (glyph) used chiefly in computing. It was first introduced in 1960 by Bob Bemer.[1] Sometimes called a reverse solidus, it is the mirror image of the common slash. It is also known as a slosh.[2] In colloquial speech, it is sometimes called a whack (however that term is considered to be properly a synonym only for the forward slash)”, wikipedia

TIP: Vim sort

Posted by erich13 on December 28, 2007

Being a big fan of vi*, I also use vim.

Not knowing how to sort, on a Windows system, from vim, I searched and found a Vim Wiki, where I read in VimTip588:

the simple sample in the tip can be solved by native :sort command, no plugin required.

:sort /\s\+/

and for the visual blocking condition, you need not any plugin neither. e.g. if your Visuall Block start at visual colume 7, without selecting it, just execute

:sort /\%7v/

Unable to install themes or extensions - Firefox - MozillaZine Knowledge Base

Posted by erich13 on July 29, 2007

Corrupt extension filesFiles that store information about the extensions you have installed can sometimes be corrupted. Deleting them can fix a number of extension issues; they will be regenerated the next time you start Firefox. [8][9]. Exit Firefox completely, then open your Firefox profile folder and delete these three files:extensions.iniextensions.cacheextensions.rdf
